Spin that reel – Phantom of the Opera slot review

The Phantom of the Opera is a Microgaming slot with 5 reels and 243 ways to win. This game is playable on all devices and starts at just 30 cents per spin and up to 15 euro per spin. Of course, you know that this game is based on the film which derives from the well-known musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber. With the original soundtrack, there are 2 base game features where you can get cash prizes and up to 3 wild reels.

Three Phantom Masks will trigger the bonus where you get to choose from three different bonus games – 1 of them allows you to make picks to win cash prizes and the other 2 are free spins features. You’ll benefit from Dancing Wilds that gives you 3x multipliers, wild reels and 2×2 wilds – you will also get up to 5 free spins extra, up to 3 wild reels, up to 5 extra wilds and a multiplier up to 4x on each free spin. It offers you wins up to 7,733 times your stake on each spin! This can result in some pretty impressive wins.

The Phantom of the Opera game looks stunning and the music and sound effects are definitely the icings on the cake. The whole game has the same dark and sinister feel to it as the movie. The set is inside the opera house and the symbols on the reels include Phantom Masks, roses, scrolls, poison, binoculars, letters, and of course various characters including Don Juan, Carlotta, Raoul, Christine and the Phantom himself.

Wilds and bonus features

There’s a wild in the regular game which replaces all symbols and there are 2 base game features. Firstly, there’s the Letter Bonus feature which is triggered when the Letter symbol appears anywhere on reel 5. This will simply reward you with a cash prize of up to 20 times your stake.

There is also the Chandelier Bonus feature which is randomly triggered in the base game. With this bonus, the Opera House Chandelier will randomly drop onto the reels and turn between 2 and 3 reels fully wild. A happy accident we call this. The Phantom Mask will trigger the bonus games when you land 3 or more of them anywhere on the reels.

The Music of the Night Free Spins feature rewards you with 10 free spins with random Phantom features in play on each free spin. You can benefit from up to 5 randomly placed wild symbols, between 2 and 5 extra free spins, up to 3 random wild reels, and a win multiplier between 2 and 4.

The Masquerade Pick Bonus feature is a 3 level pick me style game where you pick from masks to win cash prizes. You can also win more picks to win more. Level up!

The All I Ask of You Free Spins feature gives you 10 free spins but it benefits from Dancing Wilds that perfectly match the game. The Christine and Raoul symbols become wilds and dance above the reels. They then move to a random adjacent position on each free spin. When the Raoul and Christine wilds land on the same position, you will benefit from a 3x multiplier. If they land on the same reel, the whole reel becomes wild and if they land next to each other, both reels will become fully wild. If they land diagonally on adjacent reels, the wilds expand to give you a 2×2 wild. Pretty creative from the developers!

Our Verdict

Phantom of the Opera is one of the better games we have seen this year and we tip this game to win some awards in 2017. This medium variance slot can bring you nice wins in the bonus games but also in the base game, making it interesting and entertaining to play because you are not waiting for just one bonus trigger. It has the potential to payout over 7,733 times your stake on each spin (with the 4x multiplier naturally). The design, animations and the music can easily add the little extra to make this game a favorite for many future players.
